Compliant Erasure Standard
Ativo IT utilizes multiple advanced Super Wiper devices to eliminate data from hard drives, including SAS, SATA, M.2, USB, and NVMe formats. Our data sanitization process employs binary pattern overwriting—ranging from 3 to 7 passes based on required security levels—in full compliance with NIST 800-88, DoD 5220.22-M, DoD 5220.22-M ECE, and FACTA standards.

Data Sanitization Standards: DoD 5220.22-M and DoD 5220.22-M ECE
Ativo IT adheres to rigorous data destruction protocols to ensure complete and secure erasure of sensitive information from storage devices. Two key standards we follow include the DoD 5220.22-M and its extended variant, DoD 5220.22-M ECE.
3-Pass Data Overwrite (DoD 5220.22-M Standard)
This method, widely recognized and commonly used across industries in the United States, includes the following overwrite pattern:
-
Pass 1: Overwrite all addressable storage locations with binary zeroes (0s)
-
Pass 2: Overwrite all addressable storage locations with binary ones (1s)
-
Pass 3: Overwrite all addressable storage locations with a random bit pattern
7-Pass Data Overwrite (DoD 5220.22-M ECE Standard)
The Enhanced Compliance Edition (ECE) is a more comprehensive version, designed for environments with heightened security requirements. It includes:
-
Pass 1: Binary zeroes
-
Pass 2: Binary ones
-
Pass 3: Random bit pattern
-
Pass 4: Binary zeroes
-
Pass 5: Binary zeroes
-
Pass 6: Binary ones
-
Pass 7: Random bit pattern
While the 7-pass method offers an added layer of assurance, the 3-pass overwrite is still considered the standard for most applications, offering a reliable and effective approach to data sanitization in compliance with federal and industry regulations.

HIPPA Data Security Compliance
For organizations requiring top-level data security—such as compliance with HIPAA—we offer complete data destruction services. This includes physically crushing the magnetic platters within hard drives, rendering them permanently inoperable and ensuring no data can ever be written or recovered." Included in a certificate of destruction for your ITAD and electronics recycling Certificate.
